The per-hour figure is after tax and the expenses above, but before gas and other car costs. Federal tax only, standard deduction.
Why Uber taxes trip people up
The 1099-K shows what riders paid, before Uber took its cut. If you file that number without subtracting the fees on your tax summary, you pay tax on money you never got.
In our example of $45,000 gross with $12,000 of Uber fees, forgetting the fees adds about $2,357 in federal tax. The full walkthrough is in Uber driver taxes explained.

Questions
Does Uber take out taxes?
No. Uber drivers and couriers are independent contractors, so Uber withholds no income tax and no Social Security or Medicare. You pay them yourself with quarterly estimated payments and your yearly return.
Why is my Uber 1099-K higher than what I was paid?
Uber reports gross earnings: the total riders and Uber Eats customers paid for your trips. Your deposits are lower because Uber keeps its fees first. Those fees are listed on your Uber tax summary, and many of them are deductible business expenses. Put them in the fees field above.
Can I use the online miles on my Uber tax summary?
Uber counts miles in three stages while you are online: waiting for a request, driving to the pickup and driving the trip. It is a useful starting point, but keep your own log too. The IRS expects the date, miles and business purpose of your trips.
Does this work for Lyft and Uber Eats?
Yes. The tax rules are the same for rideshare and delivery apps. Enter the gross amount from your app, the fees it kept and your miles.
Are Uber tips taxed?
Tips count for self-employment tax. From 2025 through 2028, taxi and rideshare drivers are on the IRS list of tipped occupations, so up to $25,000 of qualified tips can be deducted from income tax.
