DoorDash Taxes Explained: What Dashers Owe in 2026

DoorDash treats Dashers as independent contractors. It pays you in full and does not take out any tax. You pay it yourself: self-employment tax for Social Security and Medicare, plus federal income tax, and state tax where your state has one.

The short answer: a Dasher who earned $40,000 in 2026, including $8,000 in tips, and drove 18,000 business miles owes about $3,650 in federal tax. That is about 9 % of what DoorDash paid. Without the mileage deduction it would be about $6,525.

Does DoorDash take out taxes?

No. There is no withholding on Dasher pay. That is why the IRS expects you to send quarterly estimated payments if you will owe $1,000 or more for the year. The 2026 due dates are April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027.

Which tax form you get

For payments made in 2026, DoorDash has to send a 1099-NEC if it paid you $2,000 or more. The limit used to be $600.

Getting no form does not mean the income is tax-free. You report everything you earned on Schedule C.

The two taxes Dashers pay

Tax Rate On what
Self-employment tax 15.3 % of 92.35 % of profit Profit after miles and expenses
Federal income tax 10 % to 37 % brackets Profit after the standard deduction and other deductions

The mileage deduction: your biggest deduction

The standard mileage rate for 2026 changed in the middle of the year:

Miles you drive for work count: to the first pickup area, between orders and to each drop-off. The drive home after your last order is often treated as commuting, so check your own case.

You need a record of the date, miles and business purpose of each trip. A mileage app or a notebook in the car is enough, as long as you keep it up during the year.

The rate already covers gas, oil, repairs, insurance and depreciation, so you do not deduct those on top.

The new tips deduction

From 2025 through 2028, workers in tipped jobs can deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips from income tax. The IRS final list of tipped occupations includes app-based delivery drivers.

Example: $40,000 from DoorDash

Single, no other income, 2026 figures:

Step Amount
DoorDash pay (with $8,000 tips) $40,000
Mileage: 9,000 mi x 72.5¢ + 9,000 mi x 76¢ -$13,365
Phone and bags -$800
Profit $25,835
Self-employment tax $3,650
Income tax (after standard, tips and QBI deductions) $0
Total federal tax $3,650

In this example the mileage log saves about $2,875 and the tips deduction about $633. Run your own numbers in the DoorDash tax calculator.

Other expenses you can deduct

Questions

Do I have to pay taxes on DoorDash if I made less than $2,000?

Yes, if your net earnings from self-employment are $400 or more you owe self-employment tax, and all income counts for income tax. The $2,000 figure only decides whether DoorDash has to send you a 1099-NEC.

What happens if I don't pay my DoorDash taxes?

The IRS gets a copy of your 1099, so unreported income usually gets noticed. You can owe the tax plus penalties and interest. If you can't pay in full, file on time anyway and ask the IRS for a payment plan.

Can I deduct gas as a Dasher?

Not on top of the standard mileage rate. The rate already covers gas, repairs, insurance and depreciation. You can use actual car expenses instead, but you need receipts and the business-use share of each cost.

What business code do Dashers use on Schedule C?

Many delivery drivers use 492000, couriers and messengers. Check the code list in the Schedule C instructions for the one that fits your work.
