From 1099 income to tax owed
- Add up all 1099 income: every 1099-NEC and 1099-K, plus payments that came with no form.
- Subtract business costs: expenses and the mileage deduction. What is left is your profit, on Schedule C.
- Self-employment tax: 15.3 % on 92.35 % of profit (Social Security 12.4 % up to $184,500, Medicare 2.9 %).
- Income tax: on profit minus half of the SE tax, the standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly) and the 20 % QBI deduction.
Three examples
| Who | 1099 income | Deductions | Federal tax |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freelance designer | $60,000 | $6,000 expenses | $10,654 |
| Delivery driver | $40,000 | 15,000 miles = $11,138 | $4,936 |
| Side gig with a $50,000 W-2 job | $20,000 | none | $4,610 extra |
All single filers, 2026 figures. The designer's $6,000 of expenses saves about $1,383 against paying tax on the full $60,000. The driver's mileage deduction more than halves the tax. The side gig is taxed harder because the W-2 job already fills the lowest brackets.
Which 1099 forms count
- 1099-NEC: from clients and most gig apps that paid you $2,000 or more for payments made in 2026.
- 1099-K: from payment platforms and some apps, such as Uber. It can show more than you received, because it includes fees the platform kept.
- 1099-MISC: for other payments like rent or prizes. Not self-employment income in most cases.
For the self-employment tax side alone, see the self-employment tax calculator. To plan payments with the IRS safe harbor, use the quarterly estimated tax calculator. Driving for an app? Use the calculator for DoorDash, Uber, Lyft, Instacart, Amazon Flex or Spark.
Questions
How much tax do I pay on 1099 income?
Self-employment tax of 15.3 % on 92.35 % of your profit, plus federal income tax at your bracket. After the deduction for half of SE tax, the standard deduction and the 20 % QBI deduction, most people pay 15 % to 25 % of profit in federal tax, plus state tax.
Do I pay tax on the full amount on my 1099?
No. You pay tax on profit: the 1099 amount minus business expenses and the mileage deduction. A 1099-K can also include amounts that are not income, such as refunds or fees, which you subtract on Schedule C.
Is 1099-NEC income taxed differently from 1099-K income?
No. Both are self-employment income when they come from your own work, reported together on Schedule C. The form only shows who reported the payment to the IRS.
Do I have to pay tax if I did not get a 1099?
Yes. All income is taxable whether or not a form was sent. For payments made in 2026, a business only has to send a 1099-NEC when it paid you $2,000 or more, and payment apps send a 1099-K above $20,000 and 200 transactions.
I have a W-2 job and a 1099 side gig. How is that taxed?
Your W-2 wages fill the lower tax brackets first, so the side income is taxed at a higher rate. Enter both in the calculator: it shows only the extra tax caused by the 1099 work, because the tax on the job is already withheld from your paycheck.
